Because of this. Suppose I buy an iphone. There is some problem and Apple swaps it. They rectify the problem by changing the faulty part, check the whole thing and keep it waiting for a similar case. This way, they started having a big inventory of the same. So they repackage it and sell it along with a warranty while informing the consumer that this is a Refurbished iphone.
the good thing is that no other company is involved in this process and the whole thing is done in the factory of apple itself.
since it is a refurbished item, they sell it at a lesser price. also, what i have come to know is that the latest model is not sold as refurbished one but older models are.

Let me advice you. If you could just wait a little, the iphone 5 price will drop drastically. (Around 30-35k for 16gb ver.) You have my word on it. Or else you can buy the 4s, like I did. You can either buy the factory unlocked version which is kinda expensive or check out the carrier unlocked versions which are very cheap.. But buy the illegal one at Your own risk. Any mistake in unlocking could land you in Jail good luck !
