I'm really getting tired of the whole ebook piracy complaints. For starters, it's not like I'm going to stop buying books because I can download them. Unlike music or movies, an actual physical book has always offered value beyond the information it contains, so there is reason to purchase it even if you've already got a digital copy of it.

• Books are more durable by far. Hit a book with a hammer, drop it on the street, punt it across the room, swat a sibling in the head with it, it's still going to work just fine. You could even drop it in the toilet and fully expect it to work once it's dried out. Might be a bit disgusting but it'll still work.
• If you do manage to destroy a book, it's probably going to be a damn sight cheaper to replace than whatever you read ebooks on. Rare and very old books being the exception.
• Books function nicely as instruments of pest control. I've probably squashed a hundred or more spiders with the paperbacks on my bookshelves. If you're talking hardbacks you could possibly even move up to mice and small rats, depending on your aim. If it's a really large hardback you could even add People Who Annoy You to the list (may not be legal in your area).
• Books are not vulnerable to storage device crashes. If your bookshelf collapses, you get a new one and put the books back. The same cannot be said of hard drives and other digital storage media.
• Load times and rendering speed are not an issue with books. Pdf and doc files fail especially miserably by comparison.
• About the only way for a book to contain a virus is if you sneezed in it last time you read it. Yes, I am looking at you, Microsoft Word Documents.
• Having a Trojan in a book is actually a good thing. It can be used to mark your page and as protection from STDs, including pregnancy. Once used for the latter, do not reuse for the former.
• In truly dire emergencies, books can be used to start a fire. Only in dire emergencies though. Even if you don't like the book, you can always trade it in at a used book shop towards something you do like.

Lastly, and more seriously, a physical book is simply more pleasant to read than any electronic alternative. This is why, even though I might download every book I want to read, I will still go out and purchase as many as I can afford. Lately, I've been trying to buy from the newer authors I enjoy first, to help out their finances and encourage them to continue writing, but if I see something at the book store that has obviously been a glaring hole in my collection I have to pick it up too. Don't sweat a little ebook trading, authors. You're probably not losing near as much money as you might think and you're definitely gaining readers you wouldn't have otherwise had.
