The recent web-cam crimes have exposed the once known cultural capital Pune once again. It was the ladies changing room and the city's well known Sanskrit Vidyavikas swimming pool where web camera were used in September 2003 for taking pictures of women changing their clothes. All the three including the manager of the pool who was arrested in this case were in the early 20's.

On 11th of this month another incident of web-cam usage for taking pictures of college girls in their hostel bed rooms has tarnished the image of this city of education.

Here the main accused is the 55 year old man Mr. Mohan Kulkarni who is the owner of the hostel. For the girls staying at a private hostel named Bharadwaj Bungalow at Lal Bahadur Shashtri Marg, Naripeth, Pune everything seemed to be fine and safe until January 11th of this year. On that fateful day while checking for bed bugs in the room they found a small web-cam fitted in the tube light fixture.

Fearing social stigma three girls sharing the room where this hidden camera was found decided to vacate the hostel without publicising this matter. It was only when the hostel owner Mohan Kulkarni refused to refund the deposit money the girls decided to take the help of Police. For avoiding other possible complications the girls requested police to help them vacate the hostel and get their deposit money form the owner. "The reasons for leaving the as hostel explained to Senadutta Police chowkey, raised suspicion in our mind" said Deputy Commissioner of Police Vasant Korgaonkar. Further search of the girl's hostel and the arrest of Mohan Kulkarni and his maid servant Manjushree Kotkar has raised lot of fear and insecurity among thousands of PG's in the city.A few thousands of students from various parts of India and abroad stay as paying guests and rented apartments. Apart from a few private hostels, most institutes don't have a hostel facility.

Police have seized three web-cameras, cables and a TV allegedly used by Kulkarni for filming the girl's activities in their bedrooms. Mohan Kulkarni a former Telco employee lives with his 85 year old mother and maid servant Manjushree. Among the 40 video cassettes and CD's seized from his house, six were found to contain pornographic material. Among the six porno cassettes, two were home movies of sexually explicit content and feature 55 year old Mohan Kulkarni and his 30 year old house maid Manjushree Kotkar. Apart from web-cams, computer, handy-cams, pornographic tapes, police also recovered RS. 5.92 lakhs cash.

Both the accused have been arrested under section 67 of Information Technology Act 2000 (publishing of information which is obscene in electronic form), Indian Penal Code (Section 294, obscene act and song) and section 509 (Word , gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman). T

The city police, which is probing whether Kulkarni was involved in a wider racket involving distribution of the pornographic material in and around the city, has carried out its biggest ever crackdown on pirated cassettes and CD's by sealing 54 shops in Pune and arresting 31 people and seized 23,020 CD's and other materials worth 2.3 crores.

While probing the possibilities of Mr. Kulkarni's connection with similar cyberporn crimes the Vishrambaugh police has decided to check the records of the girls who stayed in the hostel during the last three years. Part from the pornographic cassettes, some of the cassettes seized from Kulkarni contain lectures of MBA classes, as he was known as a consultant in job matters for MBA students.

At the court of judicial magistrate (First class) Y.B Diskshit, Kulkarni's lawyer Markand Aurangabad alleged that the seizure of video cassettes, VCR, Computer etc from his house was concocted. Referring to the seizure of Rs.5.92 Lakh cash from Kulkarni's house, Markand claimed that his client was a management consultant to about 290 companies across the country and that his daily income was Rs. 4500/-.
