Plot Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

The son of Emperor Franz Josef of Austria, Crown Prince Rudolf, is believed to have shot his female lover and himself in a tragic suicide pact in 1882 in Mayerling. Due to Imperial cover-ups, the full story may never be known. This story has been filmed several times, in French in 1935 and in English in 1968. Hungarian director Miklos Jancso recreates those events for his own purposes, continuing his favored theme of the rejection of paternal authority. In the film, which has very little dialog, Rudolf is a good-natured pan-sexual golden boy, who cavorts on his rural estate with a host of beautiful, aristocratic lovers and friends of both sexes. He refuses to leave his country idyll even though he has been ordered to by the Emperor, his father. Despite the fact that for a large part of the film, attractive young people go about unclothed and engaging in erotic encounters, the mood is one of melancholy rather than prurience. The Prince is a political liberal who wishes to arrange things so that the Emperor will arrest him, creating a public scandal which will provide a rallying point for the opposition. Instead, when the expected troops come, Rudolf's sensuous friends loyally ward off the Imperial officers, humiliating them in the process. The result is that the guests, the Prince and a hermaphrodite friend are killed by newly arrived Imperial reinforcements, and the now-familiar official story of murder and suicide is concocted for public consumption.

Plot

The soon-to-be Monk Talkative does his best to understand when Fairy Yeh explains what must be done. Rabbit spirits have escaped from the heavenly garden, and must be recaptured. These bunnies can assume human female form, and gorgeous forms at that. One is played by Pang Dan, who happens to be the soon-to-be Monk Talkative's wife. Talkative finds the explanation hard to follow (as do we the audience) but decides to help. Meanwhile, another rabbit spirit escapes, is rescued from hunters by scholar Yu-shu, who takes the rabbit home. While Yu-shu sleeps (with the rabbit in his bed !), the rabbit turns into the luscious Siu Mui (Keung Ka Ling), who makes love with him while he somehow manages to remain asleep. Yu-shu awakes next morning to find he is no longer a virgin, and also that a lovely young woman is calling him hubby. Perhaps in shock, or fearing that his blind mother might wonder, he tries to convince her to leave. Pang Dan's character also does the "Virgin Stance" with another bunny, played by Wong Nei. Lots of confusion and daftness follows, as the forces of heaven (the bad guys, lead by the evil Queen Of Heaven) pursue the bunnies, with concealed identities and misunderstandings all over the place.

Golden Balls (Bigas Luna, 1993)

Bigas Luna's Golden Balls is dressed up as a melodrama about an ambitious man's rise and fall, but is really an effectively funny comedy that strips down the sexual male to the point of ridicule. The sexual male of Luna's critical eye here is Benito Gonzalez (Javier Bardem), who dreams up of erecting the tallest building in the city. Right after being cheated on by his prostitute girlfriend Rita (Elisa Tovati) for his best bud, he starts laying the groundwork for the realization of his dream. First, by hooking up with model-turned-secretary Claudia (Maribel Verdu), and pleading her to sleep with the city's banker to urge him to fund his project. When that failed, he marries the banker's daughter Marta (Maria de Medeiros). Before the film reaches its halfway mark, Benito accomplishes the two top fantasies of all men: number one, to be rich and fulfill a lifelong dream with no capital, no property, but just a set of golden balls; and number two, to have a threesome with two beautiful ladies.

However, despite the outward manliness of Benito, he's actually very inept with a some curious personality quirks. Benito, the ultra-macho man, indulges in the sappy music of Julio Iglesias. He idolizes Salvador Dali, and sees himself as artist in copulation, drawing lines and figures on the bodies of his women. He has a stern insistence that only a woman of a certain weight is perfect for his body type, and this compulsion for details and his ambition overpower his sexual libido. While his wife and his paramour start kissing and fondling, he disengages himself to remind his wife about ironing his shirt for an important business meeting the following day. His idolization of Salvador Dali is so immense to the point that when his fortune runs out, his nightmare feels very similar to Dali and Luis Bunuel's collaboration in Un Chien Andalou (The Andalusian Dog), with imagery consisting of him entrapped in gigantic testicles, ants invading a woman's genitalia, and other out-of-this-world confections.

The turn-around of Benito is so outrageous, its hilarious. He gets into a car accident which inevitably makes him less virile. He loses all his fortune, his women, and gets back a few when his right hand man falls from his building and dies, with him earning from his friend's insurance. He finally hooks up with a highly-sexual dancer (Raquel Bianca) who because of her immense breasts, are way above his weight requirement. The two of them migrate to Miami, and Benito ends up as the other guy in his girlfriend's threesome with a hired gardener (Benicio del Toro), the absolute opposite of every straight man's sexual fantasy.

The film is just so obviously patterned, so grandiosely contrived, that it's nearly impossible to take it seriously. I don't think Luna leads his viewers to treat the film as a drama but inadvertently ends up as a humorous attack on the pervading machismo that intoxicates men into thinking they're kings of the world. Luna makes use of visual innuendos throughout the film. There's a preponderance of metaphor and allusions to the phallus like the erection of the city's top building, that it's almost impossible for anyone to take any of the plot contrivances as purposely made to be taken seriously. Benito makes love to his wife and Luna pans his camera upwards to reveal a pillar, umm, a phallic symbol, and just as the end of the pillar is revealed, an orgasm is made apparent. The sex scenes are staged in overt frankness, that the artfulness of the film is upstaged by the ridiculousness. Nipples are pinched, underarms are sniffed, moanings are loud and sex talk is boisterous. And I honestly think it works best that way as Golden Balls is in a heartbeat, a really funny sexual farce, effective and highly enjoyable.

Two young Swedish girls, Ulla and Ingrid, arrive in Paris to be au-pair girls. They are to be employed by Mr and Mrs Dupont. After being coldly welcomed by the wife, they find themselves naked on the sofa with the husband while his wife mastubates in the company of her dog who couldn't care less. When the girls have finished with the husband, the wife is taken care of. On hearing what's going on in his wife's bedroom, Mr. Dupont joins in while Ingrid disappears from the screen.

The following day, the two girls decide to leave their hosts and go for a naked ride with two bikers they have just met (I guess this must be what joy riding is about!).

The two girls go back to the Duponts to get their things packed and leave them. Bye bye scrumptious Ellen Earl. See you in another film! Well, not yet. Before disappearing from the film for good, the couple make love again (seems that Ellen has less fun with Insermini than she usually has with J. Marbeuf!).

The two girls settle down with the bikers and they soon fall into each other's arms and legs. Lucky the bearded one ends up with Chantal Naura who definitely knows how to handle such a situation. Poor Eva Anderson seems very awkward.

The next day, the girls are at the Swedish embassy to find a new job. Which leads them to a tall blonde and Charlie Schreiner who take them to a party in their country house in Normandy.

There he organizes a sort of blindman's-buff game. The two men are blindfolded and they have to recognize the six girls. This leads to some more sex which could really have been fun had the lighting been better, and the sound live.

Somewhere in the house a blonde masturbates to Japanese music. Who is she? This question didn't seem to cross the director's mind.

Then we are treated to a short lesbian scene involving Chantal Naura and the tall blonde girl. Then orgy time with the two men, the two au-pairs, Eva Khris and two others previously met by the swimming pool. Then the two girls hitch their way back to their biking friends and some more sex.

The following day, the four of them have a little outing by a river which gives Chantal Naura the opportunity of a (simulated ?) double penetration, and Eva Anderson that of a blowjob and doggie-style.

After debating over their return to Sweden, the girls decide to stay a little longer in France and the two bikers declare their love to them.

Unexpectedly, we see the two girls ringing at a man's door for another placement. He tries to kiss one. They threaten to depart which they eventually do, leaving him to his dream of hiring a fat Breton au-pair girl instead.

Before going home, the two girls phone their biking friends who take them away to Sweden for a 'collective wedding'.

My advice: don't hesitate to turn the sound off when the characters are not speaking (direct sound on some scenes), the music is definitely a turn off in this film. Don't miss Ellen Earl's eyes and smile (and for the French, don't miss her accent!). I wonder where she is now.
